Saptarshi Chakrabarti

Student / Researcher / Data Engineer
KU Leuven

I am currently pursuing a graduate degree in Artificial Intelligence at KU Leuven, specializing in numerical linear algebra, optimization, and robotics. Since starting this program, I have gained practical experience in AI-related fields—first as a student developer at a brain-computer interface startup, where I worked at the intersection of neuroscience and AI.

More recently, I have been working as a data engineer supporting AI research in single-cell omics. At the same time, my thesis research at the NUMA Research Unit focuses on leveraging Tensor Ring Decompositions to compress large-scale recurrent neural networks, deepening my interest in Randomized Numerical Linear Algebra (see this monograph) and its role in accelerating computational methods.

My academic work combines theoretical foundations with practical applications. I have developed drones, simulated Autonomous Surface Vehicles, and investigated Game Theory and Mechanism Design—specifically, applying Obviously Strategy-Proof Mechanisms to multi-agent reinforcement learning.

This interdisciplinary perspective stems from my first master’s degree in international business economics and management, where I specialized in finance. For my thesis, I analyzed India’s CO₂ emissions within the framework of the Paris Agreement, blending economic theory with environmental policy analysis.

With a background in Physics, I’m interested in how AI and high-performance computing can support experimental design and simulations, particularly in areas like High Energy Physics.
